The K-Mets scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to cut a 7-2 deficit to one run before Bristol shut the door to pick up a 7-6 Appalachian League win at Boyce Cox Field.
Kingsport’s two-out rally in the ninth came with a double from Shervyen Newton to score Guillermo Granadillo and Yoel Romero, a triple from Jarred Kelenic to score Newton and a single from Raul Beracierta to score Kelenic.
Kingsport (16-15) continued the threat when Mark Vientos and Phil Capra walked to load the bases. But Kenny Hernandez’s fly out to center field ended the contest.
Bristol’s Yondry Contreras was the offense for the Pirates (14-17).
The left fielder went 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Contreras had a two-run homer in the second inning, a solo shot in the fourth frame, a two-RBI single in the sixth inning and a single in the eighth.
“Amazing. I never did that before,” Contreras said of his two-home run contest. “I feel very happy with two homers in the game.”
Kingsport’s Beracierta finished 1-for-5 with three RBIs in the losing effort.
Newton added two hits and two RBIs for the K-Mets.
